The Excalibur BGS™

The Excalibur BGS™ is a disposable instrument for the collection of viable bone and marrow for transplantation within a patient. The Excalibur BGS™ operates using a powered auger that cuts and aspirates bone and marrow. The patented unique action of the auger creates suction when run with a drill motor. This suction collects bone cuttings and marrow stem cells to provide the full bone inductive potential of autologous tissue. Using minimally invasive surgical techniques the Excalibur BGS™ harvests up to 35 cc graft through a single 6 mm hole in the cortex. Harvested graft consists of marrow, bone matrix, cells and all of the growth factors involved in bone healing.

Two modes of operation allow simultaneous suction and cutting of bone or suction alone. The easy-to-use auger release allows suction and cutting modes to be quickly selected. The cutting mode exposes 5 mm of cutting instrument while the suction mode exposes just enough of the cutting auger (1 mm) to lift morselized tissue into the collection chamber.

The Excalibur BGS™, consists of a disposable collection chamber (Model EX-M6) and a 6 mm diameter auger (Model EX-AU-06). The collection chamber has a quick release ring, dynamic wiper and a 2.5 inch long shielded harvest cannula. Suction and harvest collection occur with drill motor speeds of 300 to 1200 RPM (1/3 to full speed on most surgical drills). The average rate of tissue collection is 5 to 7 cc per minute. Complete filling of the chamber may take five to seven minutes of auger operation.

Typical Harvest Sites Include:

  • Posterior Superior Iliac Spine
  • Tubercle of the Iliac Crest
  • Proximal Tibial Metaphysis
  • Calcaneal Harvest
